Mathematics can be dull and lifeless. When it is, students don't learn. Our students need to be challenged to see mathematics as a bold, artistically beautiful topic with great relevance to their lives.
My high poverty students don't see mathematics as an important topic.
They don't understand that their ability to use mathematics to make decisions and solve problems will influence their day to day experiences. They need mathematics to open the doors to their futures - but they often overlook it.
My Project
The materials I have requested will allow mathematics to be presented through art projects. By providing classroom sets of markers, poster board, and brightly colored paper, students will have the tools to make math real - building solids, creating manipulatives, coloring and creating proofs of the mathematical relationship between art and math.
Mathematics can't be taught to these students as a series of drill and kill exercises.
They need to see mathematics as a dynamic and fluid process by which they increase their ability to survive in the real world. By presenting the artistic side of mathematics students are engaged and their learning is enhanced in a multidimensional way.
