"What are we making today Mrs. Turner?" That is what I hear from my eager to learn 3rd graders as they enter my math classroom. Teaching 3rd grade math in a Title I school where 100% of the student population receives free breakfast and lunch has its challenges.
Many of my students come to me well below grade level, with no support from home for academic achievement.
We serve 2 low income housing facilities that have a high move in/out rate. Our goal is to show each of our kids that we love them, believe in them, and are here to be the foundation to any future they can dream.
My Project
School supplies are not a necessity for the families of my students. With budget cuts and funding not available for the arts, finding supplies for my students to be creative and enhance artistic abilities can be challenging to impossible.
Each day, my students incorporate crayons, colored pencils, scissors, and glue to create mosaic prints, collaborative murals, and interactive notebooks utilizing both math skills and art integration.
Classroom caddies of crayons and colored pencils will not only bring color to our classroom, but bring life to my young artists. Art is not only fun, but it is often a talent for some struggling students that may not see success in other academic areas. Adding art into my daily math classroom helps to give all of my students something to look forward to while they learn.
