My Students

My nineteen fifth graders are inquisitive risk-takers that desire to communicate content understanding via a project that encourages self expression and choice. These students demonstrate higher levels of thinking when elements of art, technology, and music can be woven into the topic of study.

My diverse students come from all walks of life.

Their financial, social, emotional, and family circumstances vary greatly. Almost sixty-five percent of our elementary school's student population participates in the free or reduced price meal program. Our class family learns important lessons about each other and ourselves because of these variances in circumstances. The fifth graders at our building are offered additional opportunities involving service learning and leadership. Most of our fifth graders rise to these occasions and take their task seriously.

My Project

Our social studies curriculum includes a study of early America's desire for independence, cause and effects of the Revolutionary War, and our country's establishment of government. The requested iPad Air will provide opportunities for my students to research an influential person from this time period. The requested ink cartridge will provide student opportunities to print off information about the selected person. Every student will choose the color of copy paper the final constructed biography will be printed on. Oftentimes, my students dig deeper into the subject of study when given the chance to express their creativity and ideas. I want my students to use the requested hangers to create their chosen person of research. They can use the grant requested various colors of construction paper, glue, scissors, assorted buttons, etc. to create their person. Each student can strategically place their typed biography onto their constructed person.

Listening to, discussing, and researching the lyrics from the requested CD songs will help my students interpret the historical events of this era and the feelings of the colonists, loyalists, patriots, and those struggling with undecided allegiance.

These resources will allow my learners opportunities to increase their understanding of early American events leading to and following the Revolutionary War. These additional materials will stimulate, motivate, and challenge my students.
