The student population that visits my classroom is truly plugged into 21st century technology and spends hours on end interacting with computer screens. Although there are benefits to this, I am seeing that they are hyper-focused on consuming content as opposed to producing it. Fewer and fewer students possess the motivation to put down their electronic devices long enough to create something authentic using their hands and their imaginations. Worse yet, many favor singular, solitary pursuits and are becoming less connected to society and the challenges that face and impact all of us.
Having the ability to provide my students with a variety of art materials helps me to spark their hands-on creativity, imagination, and desire for artistic exploration; all of which serve to connect them to the larger world around them.
My Project
I have planned for my students to illustrate found poetry, design figurative language maps, construct main idea prisms, develop ads to promote world-changing concoctions, devise movie genre posters, and create picture tiles to accompany lines of poetry.
Artistic assignments honor student choice and support differentiated instruction, which make for meaningful and memorable learning experiences!
Combining art projects into reading and writing assignments enhances learning, promotes collaboration, and helps to reach all of my students regardless of ability level. Everyone has a voice through artistic expression and there is no greater joy than seeing kids proudly share what they have created and be able to talk about, on a very personal level, what they have learned.
