Our students are resilient, capable people seeking a great education that fits their needs. We are located in Northeast Minneapolis. Our students often enter school a little behind their national peers as many did not have the opportunity to attend preschool.
Artistic abilities and sensibilities know no boundaries such as poverty, but many students never have the opportunity to explore their artistic side.
In our urban setting, it's imperative that we provide wide hands-on learning choices, including a variety of artistic styles, for our future leaders! Our students do not always understand that they have great potential, but we are working hard to change the mindsets that come with a wide array of serious challenges that many of them have already faced. We endeavor to show our students that through meaningful participation in their education, they can and will have access to all that the world has to offer. This project, in particular, will go a long way toward providing our students a world-class education.
My Project
This project brings in a working artist to share her talents and inspirations will surely have a huge impact on the kids. It will take place near the end of the school year, and in it students will create a "Cranky Box", a moving piece of art that tells a story, to explore the concept of the changes that take place in the world during the summer. The kids will create the "crankie" and will also narrate the story that goes along with the art that they create.
This opportunity to incorporate a unique and fun art project into an academic program will ground students in the idea that art can be used to inform everyday learning.
The students will also have a chance to participate authentically in creating a piece through which they will express their own understanding of the materials they are learning through both art and narration.
