I work as a Resource Specialist at an elementary school in Richmond, California. This school is highly impacted by trauma in the community and has had high teacher and staff turnover in the past. My students are often behind grade-level in their academics due to the inconsistency at school and home.
Despite their circumstances, my students come to school eager to learn, create, and grow.
They are caring and empathetic students who work very hard to adapt to the traditional school setting. I am working to meet them where they are and make school a more accessible place that gets them excited about their academic victories.
My Project
This is my first year at my school. Within the first week, I saw the need for a creative outlet. The students love to draw, color, paint, etc. Unfortunately, there is no budget for a formal art teacher or art block during the school day. This leaves classroom teachers in charge of incorporating art into their lessons.
The art club will allow students to find their creative voice, use art as an outlet, become exposed to different mediums and art history.
Your donations will buy paper, paint, oil pastels, drawing materials, and much more! I have an extensive curriculum planned that will not only allow them to scratch their creative itch but will engage them academically. I anticipate this club's reach extending beyond our time together and in their day to day classroom activities.
