Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are taking Principles of STEM and Robotics and attending an after school STEM program. Although my students come from a variety of backgrounds, including a large portion of socioeconomically disadvantaged students, the hands-on experience keeps them engaged and learning.
One of my goals as a STEM educator is to integrate the STEM field throughout various topics of study.
This involves looking at how STEM impacts other areas of life: history, civics, art, antibullying, social-emotional well being, and more. In order to minimize the effects of social distancing, we are looking for ways to keep my students engaged in real-world applications of STEM.
The STEM field is largely geared towards men, so it is my desire to create an environment that encourages young women to be involved with and successful in STEM. Through innovative projects and STEM awareness, I am hoping to balance the ratio of male to female students in STEM fields. Also, with such a high percentage of EL students and low socioeconomic students, laboratory experience and hands-on learning is an excellent way to enrich their education.
My Project
The Duckietown vehicles and navigation set are great resources in challenging our STEM and Robotics students in the area of robotics, artificial intelligence, and driving safety. Students will first build the robots and program them using a series of images. Once the robots are programmed, they will be able to navigate around a town autonomously, even stopping at stoplights and waiting for traffic.
Using cutting edge artificial intelligence technology, students will make autonomous vehicles and pave the way for a future with safer driving conditions.
Students will complete the EDX course: "Self-Driving Cars with Duckietown." In this course, students learn the basics of autonomy and AI in self-driving cars. They will learn how to use AI to help a Duckietown robot navigate around a town, responding to stop signs and stoplights. They will investigate the challenges and algorithms involved in automation with AI while using Python, Robot Operating System (ROS), and Docker. They will conclude the course by having a self-driving car that can navigate the road safely. This project is going to challenge our most advanced students, while also providing a basic foundation for those with fewer skills and experience in robotics. This experience will teach students about technology and the importance of safety features in vehicles while providing access to advanced robotics technology.
