Ms. Ford from District Heights MD is requesting art supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need art supplies for our arts integrated education! The most expensive items on our wish list is a classroom paint easel, a class set of oil pastels, and waterproof smocks.

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." This is a quote from Nelson Mandela, in which he describes the parallel between education and creating a better world. My classroom is a place where children discover, and explore - facilitating their own learning.
At this age, they enjoy learning, and they have developed an inquiring mind, always asking the question, "why".
This is a delicate stage in their life that should be fed with multiple avenues of learning. The key to retaining that inquiry stage within a child is exposure, which will hold their interest and feed their minds.
My students come from various backgrounds and are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, it is my job as an educator to find the resources to help them become successful in their academic career. My students are active, curious, and creative. I am looking for the best ways to help my students become tomorrow’s next engineers, scientists, authors, sculptors, and leaders.
The art supplies that I am requesting will help me integrate art into our core academic curricula (ie: math and reading). You are probably asking yourself, why is art important in the classroom? Well, art helps kids become more engaged in their learning.
When I was a student, my health teacher asked us to "act out" how the white blood cells protect us from getting sick.
If it wasn't for that teacher including drama and art in his lessons, I probably would not have remembered anything about red or white blood cells by the time I got to college. In 10th grade my Spanish teacher put us in groups, and asked us to come up with a song using our vocabulary words. I still remember the song, and I still remember those vocabulary words in Spanish and English. Arts integration uses teaching practices that have been show in brain based research to improve comprehension and long term retention. Not all students will be interested in arts, but the engagement involved can be leveraged to boost academic growth.
Arts integration is not a time for the teacher to give an arts and craft project in class. Crayons and construction paper will not help students create hand puppets for their plays on stories they have heard in class or read themselves. By helping me supply my classroom with maracas, oil pastels, and feathers, you are increasing our chances for academic success and long term learning. Please help me bring the arts, into our Kinderland!
