A peek inside my classroom would reveal an inclusive environment where all students discover and experience music. I believe all students deserve a high-quality music education; however, it can be a challenge to meet the needs of many students with such a wide range of ability levels and interests.
Every student is highly motivated to sing, dance and play instruments, and through music we learn respect for other cultures and different ways of doing things.
We learn to play together in ensemble. Knowing that all members of the group must work together for the group to succeed, we invest in each other’s success and lift up those who struggle. We learn to sing in languages other than English, and in so doing we listen for different sounds and different ways of expressing thoughts. We learn to compliment one another’s rhythms and melodies on instruments — an essential of good back-and-forth communication. We create movements in small groups to accompany the music we are learning. We sing and play in circles that exemplify our equality and shared community.
My Project
I'd like to provide my students with a variety of materials to encourage artful, playful and mindful music learning during exploration lab time. This time to explore music at their own pace will challenge all students to grow and learn new musical skills and concepts independently while I provide focused instruction in a small group.
These music materials will allow several activities to be set up in our classroom.
Students will be able to independently move between activities to explore, improvise and create their own unique music.
My students love to build rhythms, create melodies and explore instruments. The singing puppets, toobaloo auditory feedback phones and walkie talkies encourage vocal improvisation and solo singing. The instrument toys provide exploration and identification of the orchestra and band instruments. The glockenspiels encourage students to create and play melodies. And, the rhythm scarves will encourage students to demonstrate rhythmic movement to music.
Your support will help my students grow as creative independent musicians with unlimited possibilities, unlimited by a lack of materials. So thank you for each and every donation!
