Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the school guidance counselor at a Title I school. I visit with multiple students on a daily basis. I want to provide my students with emotional and academic support. A quote I like to use is "Take one bite at a time." I want to help my students be successful in life!

My students are majority Hispanic, they come from low income homes.

They are eager to learn. Teachers and staff at our school want to provide them every opportunity they can to learn and prosper. Our school has a dual language program that offers students an opportunity to acquire two languages. This year we implemented houses or teams for students to be a part of. The students can earn points for various things throughout their day for their house. Our school is unified but yet very competitive. We hope with our house system that students take ownership of their learning and can become successful. This year we also implemented a school store. The students have opportunities to earn pretend cash to purchase items from the store. I feel we are teaching students to take ownership of who they can become.

My Project

The materials I am requesting will help my students express their emotions through art in various ways. I feel using some of the art students create we can display around our school. I want to make students aware that it is okay to express your emotions but in safe and fun ways. We have a lot of families at our school who are going through difficult times, our students don't know how to deal with the problems they are facing. I know art is fun and it is not offered in our school. I feel when students come to visit me for counseling we can express those emotions through art. I would like to provide group counseling for certain students and have materials available for those counseling sessions. I would like the students to also be able to take away things they create and share them with family and friends. Their creations will help them be able to speak about their emotions and how they are going to deal with those emotions.

I do not have a classroom but as the school counselor I want to provide my students tools so they can express their emotions through art.

This is going to change students' lives by letting them understand that there are other outlets to relieve stress of our daily lives. I feel my students will appreciate having fun with the tools I provide them to create images or items of how they feel. I also would like to use photography with students so they also can express ways they feel.
