Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What kept you in school? For some it is sports, for others social connections, and for some it is the opportunity to express themselves through art.
My third graders are eager to learn, laugh, share, and create.
However, many of them come from challenging circumstances where their families are struggling to provide food and clothing. Things like crayons and markers are extras and don't often make the family budget. Most of the students in my school are learning English and art can be a way for them to put ideas on paper in images that can later be expressed in words, both spoken and written.
My Project
Having a room available with art supplies and instruction is a critical part of our "Magnificent Mountaineer Club". Any third grader who has all class work and homework completed and has exhibited the character traits of trustworthiness, selflessness, work ethic, self control, and responsibility are eligible to participate in the "Magnificent Mountaineer Club." These students choose from art, PE, computers, and games during this weekly motivational activity.
The art materials requested in this project will be used not only to add depth and creativity to classroom assignments, but also to motivate all one hundred third grade students at my school to complete class work, and homework as well as to be productive members of our school community.
I had a student who woke her mom (who worked nights) up early to listen to her read and sign her homework everyday so that she would be able to come to the art room during "Magnificent Mountaineer Club" on Fridays.
I want to continue to be able to provide this opportunity and motivation for next year's kids. Can you help?
