Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing. Most of them have been at the school since kindergarten and our school is special because we can really develop a close relationship with each individual student as they grow up.
As a school with a bilingual program, students are immersed in rigorous instruction in both English and Spanish.
There are numerous benefits to being bilingual, and students work very hard to access the curriculum despite it being a challenge. We have both Spanish-dominant and English-dominant speakers, which means that 100% of our students are second language learners.
My Project
Recently, I began to take a course and my professor brings art supplies to every session. She allows us, grown adults, to engage in the topics in creative ways that we dictate. I realized quickly how exciting this opportunity was and how much more I enjoy being in the class. The materials didn't distract us, so much as provide a different outlet to process the content that was being delivered.
My students are excited to learn about the different topics that we cover in class and I do not want them to lose the excitement in learning.
My students deserve access to these tools to engage them in math, creating colorful diagrams and representations as well as to show how they interpret the reading that we are doing with our core novels in Spanish. These tools will provide an avenue for my students to harness their learning and have fun while doing it.
