Help me give my students healing art supplies. Paint, water colors, modeling clay, and more will be used as an outlet and healing for our Paradise students.
The students at our elementary school are amazing, resilient young people. Most of them come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and many of them have faced some type of trauma in their lives already. Despite all that, they are so happy to come to school.
On Thursday, November 8th that all changed.
School had just started, when we were suddenly notified that we needed to evacuate due to a rapidly approaching fire that started in a nearby town. Everyone thought we would evacuate and see each other the next day for our annual Veteran’s Day assembly. We were wrong!
By evening, we knew that our town had been wiped out by this catastrophic event and most of our students and teachers had lost their homes. It was literally gone! I am writing this DonorsChoose.org project on behalf of my students, as our school had been destroyed as well. Not a classroom left standing, all books and supplies gone!
We have secured buildings and will be reunited with one another on December 3rd! Yippee! Art therapy is one way students can express themselves after experiencing trauma. It can help promote students' well-being and allow them to relax and relieve stress.
My Project
Art is a great way to enhance creativity and expression. With students who have experienced trauma, it can allow them to express and channel their feelings as they create with their hands, their hearts, and their feelings.
Evacuating from the Camp Fire was a very traumatic experience for all of our students.
Being able to create and express themselves through art will be very beneficial in promoting their well-being.
These supplies will give our students an outlet to reduce stress and will provide a healing activity for them all to participate in as they ease back in to school next week.
