I have the absolute PLEASURE of being our school's preschool to sixth-grade school counselor! Throughout the years, I have carried many roles with this title, but my favorite role is working with our amazing students. Our school houses over 730 students. Many of them come to our school lacking social and emotional skills. In addition to that, many of them come to school on a daily basis without their basic needs being met. It is, without doubt, the most rewarding job I could have ever asked for to be able to assist and help these students, as well as all of the students in my district.
Over 70% of our students come from low-income households, but that does not stop them from being some of the most friendly, positive, and hardworking students.
Throughout the day, I am able to work with the students helping them to get acquainted with the school, offer them guidance and support in terms of academic, personal, parental, and social pressures, as well as advocate for their well-being. In addition to that, I get to help students process problems, develop strategies, implement coping skills, and plan and set academic, social/emotional, and career goals!
Working with children of varying ages, their ability to verbally express themselves can be vastly different. Some kids love to just express themselves through an artistic escapes whether through painting, drawing, singing, acting everyone has their safe outlet.
I want to make sure I have tools that can support any students needs of expression, especially if verbal expression is not their preference at that point and time!
The paint, clay, paper and other materials will be so awesome to have to meet my kids where they are at and help bring them through whatever they are processing! It is so freeing for the kids to have exactly what they need to release themselves! The kids light up when you are attentive to their needs and style!
