My counseling students are amazing, enthusiastic kids who work so hard each day in their classrooms to reach the high standards expected of them. They love hands-on activities, working together, and achieving the counseling and academic goals they set for themselves.
They also love to be creative, try new things, and explore social-emotional learning in groups.
My students have such special, joyful spirits and put everything into all that they do despite what they may be dealing with in their personal lives. They work hard to be the best humans they can be, and they deserve all the best when they come to school.
I am asking for paint, canvases, and painting aprons so my students can participate in art therapy activities during counseling lessons, one-on-one sessions, and in groups. Over the last couple of years, I have informally introduced art therapy through painting to many of my counseling students. I have seen it make an incredible impact on the students socially, emotionally, and even academically.
Art therapy can help students manage behaviors, process feelings, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase self-esteem.
Art therapy through painting makes students feel more comfortable with the counseling process as well as being enjoyable and relaxing. I have seen these benefits firsthand and cannot say enough about how much it has helped my students and our school.
I would like to continue with painting art therapy activities in the future, introduce more formal lessons and activities in my counseling groups, and even widen the scope of students who are participating. I have received such an enthusiastic response from students who have participated in art therapy I would like to continue to provide this support. Students are able to discover a whole new world that provides them with coping strategies, a safe, calm environment, and a reprieve from some of their daily struggles and challenges.
