I teach a special education class in a Title I school. I serve 30 students who range from kindergarten to fifth grade. Their disabilities range from learning disabilities to visual impairments. They come from diverse backgrounds. Some students have limited verbal abilities. Five students have limited motor skills, which limits their writing ability. Most are mainstreamed during the day into regular education classrooms. They are at least two years behind their peers. Many come from impoverished backgrounds with little parental involvement.
When working with my students and other classrooms, it is exhilarating to watch them all learn about each other.
My Project
My students with special needs learn best through hands-on and tactile activities using art materials such as these. They are concrete learners. These art materials will help make learning meaningful and help teach my students their letters, words in a fun and creative way while allowing my students to express themselves. Materials such as these help my students become successful and eager learners that will last a lifetime. These bright and wonderful materials will allow my students to practice new concepts over and over again. while linking literacy and art in new ways. Research shows that students with special needs need to practice new concepts many times for mastery using all the different modalities.
