Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a brand new school in Midtown Manhattan (High School of Hospitality Management) and we have been trying to build up our teacher resources in our school. One thing we desperately need are class sets of textbooks for our students. My students learn in many different ways. One way I like to encourage my students to learn history is through art. We would like several art history textbooks which we can use in our classroom.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and read and write on many different skill levels. Many of my students struggle greatly with their reading and English language skills; however, at the end of this school year they are required to take the NYS Regents Exam in Global History.
I find that often the best way to reach many of my students is through the art of the world. I love to begin a lesson with a picture that illustrates a concept or a region of the world in a way that my students might not be able to devise on their own. I find that by starting the day with a picture, students are less daunted by the task of reading texts and learning history.
The first Unit we are studying is China. We study the history of China from its ancient civilizations through today. If I had access to this text book, I would look at the art from each of the dynasties that we study in order to understand the complexities of Chinese culture. We would look for the influences of family and later of silk which we would then compare with modern images of Chinese Communist Propaganda. I find that the easiest way for my students to understand a concept is for them to first see it unfold before their eyes. With this text book my students will be able to learn history from a perspective that they will embrace and enjoy.
Thank you so much for your generous support.
