This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My typical day would be described as organized chaos, since there are so many kids and so many levels to accommodate. My students know that the art room is a place to express yourself and put your worries aside for the 45 minutes they are in the room once a week.
So that accounts for over 500 kids, ranging from K through 5th grade.
We are a magnet school so students from all neighborhoods come together in one school. My school is on the free and reduced-price lunch program for 100% of our students. Some students don't get to experience any type of art in their lives other than in their art class, so for me that's a large opportunity I need to take on and expose them to as much as possible.
My Project
I am looking to continue to build our art program and allow the students to expand their horizons.
By allowing the students to learn to weave would be another thing to try to provide success to all students.
Students will be taught to weave on various types of looms based on their age, and weave things such as tapestries and rugs.
I am also asking for various painting materials such as watercolors and canvases to give students opportunities to paint! With watercolors there is an abundance of techniques that can be taught, so ensuring that there are enough available is important!
