Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, insightful and eager to learn! They come into my classroom each day, eyes twinkling with excitement, asking me as they take their seats, "Ms. Mackey, what are we going to do today in art???"
You can tell from their excitement that coming to art is the highlight of their day!
This is where they get to be themselves, use their imaginations and discover new and exciting methods to create and learn.
Our school is located in Hermosa (meaning "beautiful"). It's a working-class neighborhood on the northwest side of Chicago. Most of my students do not have the same resources available to their suburban counterparts because their families simply cannot afford it.
Because of this, I want to be able to provide them with the tools they need to flourish, learn and be their creative selves. Each student in my class is so special to me in their own unique way, and it's priceless to see their abilities come alive when they have the proper tools they need to create and discover.
My Project
I teach in an old library. This means that there isn't the storage that you might find in a traditional art classroom. This is why I'm asking for a storage unit for my class, in order to keep art fun, but still organized. It's a challenge when you teach 725 students a week! I'm also requesting a recycling bin to teach them how to become responsible citizens in this world, as I feel that in my position, seeing all the students in my school, I can make an impact and it's my responsibility. Lastly, I'm asking for some basic art supplies such as glue and paint so that they can have an art class where they can do more than just coloring sheets, which unfortunately some art teachers have to resort to due to lack of funding.
The items I'm requesting will help my students, not only in art, but it will help them develop important life skills such as organization and caring for the environment.
