Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my class are bright, eager learners who come from diverse backgrounds. We started off the school year ready to build on foundational reading skills and take on the responsibilities and challenges of first grade!
First graders see tremendous progress in their reading skills and are also able to tackle math problems that require more critical thinking.
In addition to academic content, I help my students develop essential social-emotional skills through cooperative learning experiences. Our classroom is a community in which kindness and mutual respect are emphasized. We celebrate both our successes and failures and we persevere in the face of challenges! We are tough problem solvers, kind friends, math superstars, strong speakers...and so much more!
My Project
Art is such an important part of education and it can be extremely difficult to find the time for students to explore their inner artists. A few months ago I made a commitment to myself and my students that I would make art a priority in our classroom, which is why we started to do Watercolor Wednesday.
I set aside 30 minutes at the end of every Wednesday for students to create their watercolor masterpieces!
Each week there is a theme that ties into other content areas. Our science topics often lend themselves well to painting, so we do lots of paintings of the different seasons and habitats and animals that we are writing about in our informative writing unit. I teach about different types of brush strokes, composition, and colors.....and the kids LOVE it! They look forward to it more than other activity we do in our class and I find that students are at their best when they are putting paintbrush to paper.
I started off the year with more watercolor paper than I knew what to do with, but since each student has been creating a watercolor painting every week, we are almost out! Painting on actual watercolor paper is very important because normal paper curls and rips and can be quite frustrating to work with. I display their artwork in our classroom so that everyone can enjoy it. I will also be creating a book with all of their paintings. Each of them will have something special to take home at the end of the year.
