I teach 40 preschoolers every day. Preschool is usually their first exposure to school and I want to make it a positive experience. Students come to school in the morning or in the afternoon for 3 hours at a time. I want my students to be reading at the end of the year. My students come from a very economically diverse background. A lot of my students are learning English as their second language. They speak Somali, Vietnamese, Spanish, and Chinese. I have a lot of different cultures represented in my classroom. My biggest challenge is accommodating these different languages. Many students come to preschool not speaking or knowing any English.
Last year I asked for an art table where preschoolers could go and create. This area has been a big hit and I see a different side to them when they have art materials to create with. I have been letting them use the markers, crayons, paper, glue and tape I have in the classroom, but we are running out of supplies. I want to give them new materials to create artwork with.
With my limited budget I am not able to give them the open ended materials they need to make their artwork.
I know they are able to make different kinds of structures, pictures and art, they just need the right resources. I believe with these materials I will begin to see how creative they are when given the correct materials. I cannot wait to see what my preschoolers come up with when this project gets funded.
