My students need art supplies such as watercolors, oil pastels, and drawing pads for our upcoming art unit. We spend time learning about 12 different artists and then create our own art like those artists.
This will be most of my students first school experience, so we want to make it fun, exciting, and full of hands-on learning. Our class is picked based on students with the most needs, in order to get them ready for kindergarten. Many of my students are being raised in single parent households and receive a free/reduced-price lunch, based on their socioeconomic status. We want to provide them with life and learning experiences, so they are not prevented from getting ahead early in life.
Our students like to move.
They love to read and love lots of positive attention. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I cannot control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic success.
My Project
Each spring, our class starts an art unit. In our art unit, we learn about 12 different artists and how they created their art. Some examples are: Monet, Picasso, Georgia O'Keefe, and several others.
Our students need some supplies in order to be like the artists we are studying.
We want our class to have the full experience, so we need some watercolor paper, paint, and drawing pads. This is a special and fun time for our young artists. We cannot wait to see them grow and learn during this unit as they become better artists.
At the end of the unit, we create our own Art Gallery and invite families to come and view our art and hard work. We will also go and visit an art museum here in Charleston.
