I teach art for all the first graders in our school. Currently I only have old: watercolors, acrylic paint, pencils, crayons, markers, and colored pencils. My dream is that the first graders experience art using higher quality art mediums, especially since art is less valued in schools now.
My students are 60 first grade artists.
We are a low income school, and many students live in poverty. We live 30 minutes from the ocean, and many students have never seen the ocean before. These students have hard lives, and art is an amazing way for students to express themselves if they cannot/ do it with words.
My Project
My envision is for my students to learn how to express themselves by using art as an outlet, give a voice to the voiceless. It is also my dream to create units about famous artists and have my students recreate famous pieces of art using the same techniques used by the artists. These supplies would help my students be able to experience art in its fullness, instead of being limited to the small amount of art mediums we currently use.
It will give the first grade artists the opportunity to experience art at a deeper and more engaging level, which is extremely rare in schools today.
My students will also be able to learn about another way to express themselves, when often times there voices are unheard. It will also give these artists more opportunities to work on their fine motor skills, and develop perseverance and dedication to an art project that may take a few days to complete.
