I want my kids to have the opportunity to be creative using real art materials. I teach an inclusive 4th/5th grade split class of 30 kids in a very low-income neighborhood on Chicago's far south side. Our Principal is doing some great things with our school, but we are still very short on supplies. Our current art supplies consist of a basket containing some crayons, a few markers, and a couple colored pencils. Its barely enough for the entire room to be able to color at the same time. The class has art once per week, but I like to incorporate art into other subjects, such as social studies and science. This is virtually impossible with our present supplies. All I would like are 30 packets of colored pencils, each box containing at least 6-8 colored pencils. 30 cheap handheld pencil sharpeners would also be very useful. Finally, some paper, size 11 x 17 inches or larger, would be perfect for the various drawings and posters I would like the students to use the materials with. I have an art background and I find that students can learn complex subjects, like the organelles within a cell, by drawing a model of it. Drawing a picture of a historical period helps social studies come to life. Art is a very useful tool to help students become interested and learn the subjects that are crucial to their development.
