Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a grades 6-10 (soon to be 6-12) all-girls public school in the South Bronx with a focus on STEM. My students come primarily from within the Bronx; the majority are black or Hispanic, and roughly 87% of students qualifying for free lunch.
Our students are engaged, curious, and most importantly, excited about learning.
They are thrilled to participate in all opportunities that come their way, and approach challenges with excitement. Being in an all girls school, they're also eager to represent girls who break the mold and are excited to get involved in activities - such as STEM and athletics - that aren't typically thought of as 'girly.' The back of their uniform shirts proclaims that 'GIRLS RULE!' and they exemplify this idea every day.
My Project
Our school has a very limited arts program, and yet I find myself with an array of talented artists and designers. They are working very hard on their own to develop portfolios so that they can apply to summer arts programs and art specific colleges once they become seniors, and I would love to be able to provide them with the supplies needed to make their dreams come true.
The students need these supplies in order to show off their talents and skills to prospective colleges.
Students have specifically requested materials based on the type of art they make, such as paints, paper, and other drawing and illustration supplies. Upperclassmen will have access to all of these materials as needed, and next year the supplies will become part of the store for the arts classroom once we officially hire a visual arts teacher.
