This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our middle school is a Title I school in South Los Angeles. This means a large majority of our students qualify for free or reduced-priced school lunches. We are a population of 535 students and 27 teachers, with about 25 classified staff. At our school, there is a high number of students who are in the foster care system or are fostering with extended family.
The students at our school are dealing with unusual amounts of stress and trauma associated with poverty, immigration status, and single parent households.
More than 20% of our students have been identified as having special needs.
Our students are intelligent, resilient, kind, and compassionate if they are given the opportunity to show their best selves. Our students may have more challenges to deal with than other youth in more affluent neighborhoods, but our students benefit from excellent teachers who are kind, compassionate and committed to their students.
My Project
These art supplies will stimulate creativity in my students and allow their own voices and ideas to be expressed with many choices of media. With these high quality art supplies, my students will be able to design and create their art projects without limitations. These art supplies will engage my students at a time when they are struggling to remain connected and engaged. Art and creativity is what my students need to be able to focus, discover what they can do, explore what they can do with different medias, and bring their ideas to fruition.
My students have had the wonderful luck to have taken part in an art class this past October and my students were so engaged and excited about their creations, and since then, they have been asking me for more clay!
I decided that I would try to get them good art materials so they would have the opportunity to explore what amazing things that they can do with good art supplies.
Help me inspire my students even more when they open their professional art kits and try their materials out!
