Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep." -Scott Adams. We will use construction paper crayons to explore making mistakes into success so that students can learn to use mistakes as an opportunity to grow.

My students are in the advanced class of our fourth grade.

Our school is considered low performing by our state, but we have made good progress over the last ten years and have fared better than the neighboring schools. My students are bright and inquisitive. They have a fun, friendly sense of humor. If you met my students on the street, you might assume that they have many strikes against them in life, but you would be wrong. They love learning and they will be successful at whatever they put their minds to. But with the heavy emphasis on testing, they spend too much time completing worksheets and not enough time using their imaginations. I want to raise the ceiling of their expectations for themselves.

My Project

We will use the construction paper and construction paper crayons to make art that has high contrast. Our first activity will be a round robin art project. Each student will start their art work and after 8 minutes, we will pass the art to the next student who will continue as they see fit. After 7 minutes, we will pass again. After 6 minutes, we will pass another time. After 5 minutes the students will pass again. 4 more minutes and we pass to the original artist. I will give the original artist 3 minutes to finish their work. We will post our art work and then discuss how it felt and what we have learned. The students will decide on another system of group work and we will make a second project. The culminating piece will be done exclusively by each student, but they will be challenged to incorporate other techniques they have seen.

This project will help my students feel more comfortable with mistakes and the loss of control.

Many of my students have perfectionist tendencies and can become very upset over small bumps in the road. My students will bond with their classmates and be more able to ask each other for help. Students will see that they won't always have control, but they can always have a positive response to change.
