My students need art supplies in order to maximize creative expressions in each subject. The more opportunities they have to create meaningful projects and creations will solidify their learning and prompt critical thinking!
My students are bilingual learners who come from low-income neighborhoods. They are incredibly resilient and are enthusiastic learners! They are sponges for mindfulness practices and are quick to make real-world connections.
They all have experienced living and traveling in different countries and states, leading to minds incredibly receptive to new ideas and concepts.
Their parents often work multiple jobs and from paycheck to paycheck, making extra funds for supplies and art a luxury that most cannot afford. We dance and sing on a daily basis, as well as celebrating many important artists and leaders of different cultures. In this way we admire and learn from the whole world, as well as those who have paved the way.
My students love to express themselves and do not have the supplies at home to do so. I spend quite a lot already on them and art supplies are sometimes some of the most expensive, yet some of the most basic for basic student projects! Our classroom is almost empty and yet we do our best to create with what we have and care for them with love. When a child is able to express themselves and create work that reflects their learning, not only does it create pride for themselves, but also for their peers and school. Artistic expression should be a fundamental right for all students!
