This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students in our school range from first grade to eighth grade. I work with students in third, fourth, and seventh grades. Academically, many of them are reading close to grade level but are not quite there yet. They really need an extra push to move forward in their academic goals.
The students in my class are involved in a wonderful reading program that promotes real world reading and helps develop creativity.
The students move through several stations which include directly working with me, responding to books that they read independently, and practicing individual skills on the computer. Materials such as crayons, markers, colored pencils and journals would increase their creativity for responding to reading.
My Project
The students respond to reading everyday in my classroom. They usually have a small journal and they write a sentence or two about whatever they read that day. The task usually gets completed but at a very minimal level.
My students need art supplies such as crayons, markers and colored pencils to spark some creativity in their responses.
Having access to these supplies will encourage students to add illustrations to their writing. Additionally, students who are okay with completing the minimal amount of writing will be motivated to write more. They can use their illustrations as a springboard for writing. They can read a book, draw a picture about what they read and then describe their illustrations in writing.
