Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I have been lucky enough to work for an amazing charter school called YES Prep. Guiding students to find confidence in their own creativity is one of my greatest joys. I have been lucky enough to live out this joy each day by getting to see my students grow through the creative process.
The students at YES Prep Southeast are like no other students I have ever taught.
They are the hardest working kids I know. They make me laugh but also challenge me to think. Although it can be extremely challenging working to become a first generation college graduate, it is a challenge our students willingly take on. They work toward this goal every day from the time they are in 6th grade all the way to senior year of high school. Because I believe they are the best and hardest working students in all of Houston, I want to make sure I am working my hardest to provide them with the best!
My Project
These materials will be used for the whole art department! We have 6th and 7th grade Art for middle school students and Art I, Art II and AP Studio Art for high school students. For Art I, Art II and AP Studio Art, I am hoping to introduce them to printmaking this year. The supplies in this order will allow my students to create a block print that can be used multiple times to create beautiful prints on paper. This is a wonderful experience for all students and really pushes them to think of art in a critical, thoughtful manner.
The remainder of the materials are supplies that we use everyday in both middle and high school classes. As many of you know, art supplies can only go so long before they become ineffective or need to be replaced. Some of these supplies include paper, paintbrushes, colored pencils and watercolors.
Growing up art class was the highlight of my day.
It was a time when I could use my greatest strength: creativity. As an art teacher, I have the amazing opportunity to see this joy in many of my students faces when they walk into the classroom. I strongly believe that art classes bring life into our schools and challenge our students to be better critical thinkers and problem solvers. It also allows our students to learn more about themselves, their classmates and their community.
