As a STEM teacher in a Title I school, I find my students are faced with a multitude of challenges both in and out of the classroom. Unfortunately, the struggle with basic needs like shelter, food, and clothing has placed a heavy burden on the minds of a majority of the students. However, they all have big dreams of success, of going to college and becoming productive citizens.
Although my students have a strong desire to learn and are very hard working, a deficit they possess as a whole group is the background experiences with creative design and hands-on problem solving.
It is my wish to provide my students with opportunities that will allow them the ability to stretch their creative thinking and challenge their design and problem-solving skills.
My Project
The Provo Explore One Cutting Machine will help bring the joy of ART creativity to our STEM class. My students have been working so hard with problem solving and the engineering design process. They have studied, researched, designed, and created their own projects like pulley systems, catapults, turbines, etc. One thing missing is the ability to add more pizzazz to their final projects. Through a student survey, I found out that the students felt this cutting machine would be the answer they needed to add the WOW to their designs. As we discussed the option of getting one, the students exploded with cheers and excitement!
