Students use art as a way to express how they see and understand the world around them. There are so many unanswered questions in the world, and finding the answers through hands-on artistic experiments is exhilarating and unforgettable. One of the least talked about phenomena of North Carolina is the presence of bioluminescent organisms off the Outer Banks. I will be teaching our students about this phenomena while feeding into the excitement and novelty of using black lights in the art room to understand the science behind these reactions!
Our students will benefit from establishing a strong link between art and science in order to express their creativity and satisfy their curiosity.
The oil pastels, paint, paper, and fluorescent art materials that glow in the presence of black lights will be used to study the similarities and differences between bioluminescent plankton and jellyfish off of North Carolina's coast. We will highlight the advantages of bioluminescence as a form of protection from predators and the differences and similarities in bioluminescence in nature and fluorescent paints. Students will also be able to create their own version of scientific drawings of bioluminescent creatures in a dark room under the black lights, looking at how scientists like Maria Sibylla Merian and John James Audubon used visualization skills and creativity to record their scientific findings.
I can't wait to find the answers to the questions that these materials will motivate my students to ask. We're all learning together, aren't we?
