This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My K-5 students are at a high poverty school. They have not had a great experience with the art class in the past, and I am making it my mission (my first year here) to turn that around.
Our school is an achievement school in a low SES neighborhood.
All students receive free or reduced-rate lunch. They do not have access to art supplies at home and do not have opportunities to express themselves through art. My goal is to change that.
I am hoping that this year will change their perspective on how much art can enhance their lives.
My Project
At the beginning of each class, we observe works of art displayed on a whiteboard. We describe, analyze, interpret and judge these works.
I know many teachers just use digital images, but I have found my students -- of all ages -- really enjoy getting up close to the prints and looking at them throughout the class (I rotate them out each week).
Having a larger collection of prints will widen students’ scope of the art world. For many of my students, this is their first time experiencing these famous pieces and I would love to broaden their horizons even more.
