Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you were young, what do you remember doing in school? In my case I remember our fun art projects.
I teach in a high poverty school in west Phoenix.
My second grade students are all learning how to read, write, and speak in English. My kids face overwhelming obstacles, but that never stops them from achieving their goals. They come to school ready and eager to learn and always with a smiling face.
My Project
As an English language learner myself, I understand the obstacles my students are facing on a daily basis.
Fortunately, art is an area in which all children can succeed. Research also shows that when educators tie art into their curriculum, children's' learning and retention improves. I have integrated art within reading, writing, science and social studies now so that my students always get a chance to shine in the areas that they love.
I am requesting materials to create art portfolios in which the students will store their art projects alongside their academic work. The portfolio will serve students in reflecting on what they learned throughout the year. We will be studying American symbols soon, and the children will be creating art projects to go along with their writing pieces. As soon as they are finished each child will be able to place their work into their portfolio.
Please consider making a donation to support our classroom project.
These portfolios will mean the world to my students, and they will preserve their wonderful art projects for years to come. Thank you for reading about my little artists!
