Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I hope to receive materials and equipment to teach my students about animation I teach art at Nathan Hale Elementary School. Since most of my students haven't been exposed to a lot of art, I feel that it's important to “meet them where they are,” to start with forms of art with which the students are already familiar and then expand their frame of reference from there.
One of the subjects we cover is animation. All of our students are intimately familiar with cartoons and they are amazed when they find out that the process is so simple that they can create their own. We have experimented with clay animation (the same type of animation used to make the classic “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Frosty the Snowman” cartoons). Clay is used to create all of the characters and these characters are moved in small increments and photographed. When these images are viewed quickly, the characters appear to move, grow, shrink, or transform by themselves. Samples of our animations can be seen on our school's web site at http://hale.cps.k12.il.us/around/art7/artSAG/clayAnime04/clayanime2.htm.
Unfortunately, we haven't been able to offer this lesson recently because of budget cuts. We are hoping to receive clay, software, and memory cards for our cameras so that we can offer this lesson this year (we already have cameras, some software, and computers that we can use to create these animations). These supplies and equipment would be used by all of the students in 7th grade (about 100 students). I am really excited about the possibility of once again transforming our students from people who sit passively in front of the television to people who are active, creative, and in charge.
