I am more than blessed to be a teacher in the School District of Philadelphia! I teach an art through literacy class to grades K-5. The students at our school represent an incredibly diverse background and speak over twenty languages. They thoroughly enjoy getting time each week to experience new literature and create art projects to go with the stories they read and write. Right now, I don't have a classroom due to overcrowded classrooms in the district. However, they still have their art- on a cart!
These bright and resilient students deserve the opportunity to let their imaginative minds get to work (and sometimes get a little messy) in art every week!
Since I am serving a low income population of over 600 students, a lot of the art supplies we use come out of my own pocket, or the pockets of generous homeroom teachers that allow me to use their space.
Providing these young scholars with enriching art through literacy lessons will add a supportive and creative culture to the school's community, now and for years to come.
My Project
There's nothing like the sight of paint stained fingers, and faces deeply engaged in an art project! We've been making our art on a cart class work thanks to generous classroom teachers that share their spaces, and students who love to help move materials from classroom to classroom. Our biggest challenge is replenishing the supplies for an ever-growing population of students with an ever-shrinking budget.
With your help, every child at our school will have the opportunity to create artwork they're proud of with quality materials that they deserve.
Our district is home to some immensely talented pupils, and they greatly appreciate the opportunities they are given during art to let their creativity shine.
