Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing, inquisitive, and inspiring! Their socioeconomic status varies. My students are curious learners. Our school is a Title I school, with limited resources for our very special population of students.
My students have Severe Intellectual Disabilities, but that does not stop them from trying their best and learning as much as they can.
They are capable of understanding their surroundings, and they constantly want to explore their world. They enjoy learning and work so hard every single day. They love Art and enjoy expressing themselves in creative ways.
My Project
My students have severe intellectual disabilities and they love to be creative with expressive Art.
They want to express themselves but are limited because of their cognitive functioning levels.
Creating Art gives them the chance to wish upon a star and express themselves creatively. Art can be created by anyone, anywhere, with any level of cognitive functioning. That’s what makes Art accessible to all if they are given the chance and the materials to create.
Art is a universal language. Students that are given the opportunity to express their ideas through artistic expression are more engaged in their learning. My students love to create Art in many different mediums. We need supplies to enable our creative students to express themselves and share their creations. Having puppet kits, paintable bags, visors and various paints and collage materials will allow for amazing art exploration. Scratch rainbow paper, wiggly eyes, peel and stick jewels and glue sticks will be turned into masterpieces before their eyes. When they have finished these wonderful art projects, they can proudly display them around our classroom. My students have intellectual disabilities and Art is a creative outlet for them to work alongside typically developing peers and share their love of art. I want to be able to provide these opportunities for my students.
