Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in an Oakland Title I school, but that doesn't stop their excitement for learning. The entire school receives free breakfast and lunch. We have a food pantry for families twice a week. We have an onsite free health clinic for families. Most of my students are English Language learners that speak little to no English. In fact there will be six different languages spoken in our classroom this year. Some are students have learning challenges such as Autism. They are all between the ages of five and six, full of so much energy and life! Each student's home life is different (some even homeless) yet they walk in each day with smiles and are ready to learn.
My Project
We are ramping up our art center for project based learning time in the afternoons. Students are loving their watercolor paints and I would really like to introduce painting on an easel next. Our classroom is quite small and having a rolling easel that allows four students to work simultaneously would be ideal! We are also desperate for new cubbies for our student work! Our current cubbies are falling apart. Finally the marble run will add tremendously to our STEM center where students are building with magna tiles and blocks every day. I know that the experimentation and critical thinking developed with the marble run will be a huge addition to our classroom environment!
