Art can make you smart! According to the NY Times article dated Nov. 23, 2013 there is a strong correlation between arts education and a range of desirable outcomes such as stronger critical thinking skills, higher levels of social tolerance, and greater historical empathy.
I have a class of 24 third graders who are hunger for some experience in arts.
These children are from different backgrounds. Therefore they have varied learning styles and developmental needs. My students are English learners, at-risk students, high functioning autistic/Asperger's syndrome kids, gifted and talented pupils. My school is a Title I Program. That means most of the children receive free or reduced lunch. They come from low-income families.
My Project
I would like to start sculpting sessions to develop my students' eye, intuition, and imagination. This class is for beginners. The children would learn to sculpt objects, animals, or abstract items and create large or small projects from their imagination, drawing, or photo. Their inspirations should come from various academic subjects. For an instance, in math they could create an usable object like a soap dish with repeated patterns and fractional concepts embedded in the designs. This could be done with an air dry clay.
You can ensure that each child achieve his or her maximum potential in Arts by providing him/her the unique material such as a clay to learn, practice, and revisit important concepts.
You will make it possible for my students to have a great sense of self worth through working cooperatively with one another and engaging in discussions when developing each piece of art. This enrichment resource surely meets their different needs and learning styles.
