Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"An arts education helps build academic skills and increase academic performance, while also providing alternative opportunities to reward the skills of children who learn differently." -- Gavin Newsom, Lieutenant Governor of California
In an age where the academic focus is on test scores, students rarely have time to develop fine motor skills.
My students love to learn, but there is more to learning that reading, writing, and math. Artist studies will introduce students to famous artists, while providing opportunities for creative expression as well as focusing our reading and writing lessons.
My Project
Each month, I will focus my students on a new artist -- Picasso, Van Gogh, Warhol, Monet, etc. We will read biographies about the artist, read and observe stories illustrated in the artist's style, see samples of their work, and then create our own art integrating the artist's techniques. I'm hoping that these focused artist studies will empower my students through art, and inspire them to expand their repertoire of artistic styles.
Our school is in our second year of being a STEAM Academy.
I feel like I have successfully integrated science, technology, engineering, and math into my classroom. At the same time I feel that I am lacking in providing quality art education for my students. These artist studies will raise the bar, and provide more focused art instruction.
