I have been teaching kindergarten for three years at my current school which services students from low-income homes in Cleveland, Ohio. I love this age group because they love to come to school!
I love how my students come in every morning, smiling and happy to be here!
One of the things that excite them the most are art projects. We do not have an art teacher so I try to incorporate arts and crafts into the curriculum whenever I can.
My Project
My students love doing art and they learn from the projects they do! A lot of students connect to their learning better by doing...for example we make a craft for each letter of the alphabet. Making these art projects help my students learn their letters and retain critical information For example, "the letter C makes the /c/ sound. C is for cat," so we make a cat art craft and most students are able to remember the letter, sound and keyword from this activity. We will also use the materials in other subjects. For example in math, students do a lot of sorting, cut, and paste, etc. which requires a lot of glue and paper. We will use the construction paper and cardstock across the curriculum because in science and social studies we often engage in projects that require these materials.
