Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Primary students have so many things to learn! My kindergarten and first grade students must master many academic tasks and all the foundational skills they need to learn them!
Some of my students aren't able to attend preschool, so they haven't had as many opportunities to develop fine motor skills or the social-emotional skills like turn-taking and cooperation that kids practice in pre-school.
Most of my students do not speak English at home. School is their only chance to practice their new language. It's important that they develop their skills both through structured practice and in conversation with their peers throughout the day.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of arts and crafts materials that will provide my students with integrated art experiences. We will use these materials to reinforce key academic concepts. For instance, students will explore geometry and pattern by making mosaics and fashioning designs out of shape stickers. The materials I have selected will provide lots of ways to develop fine motor skills. Paper art like quilling helps students develop hand-eye tracking and finger acuity, skills necessary for fluent reading and easy writing. All of these art supplies will enable my students to work collaboratively and creatively, leading to natural opportunities to discuss their work. As they create, they'll also refine their English language skills!
