Art Library for Representation, Affirmation, & Empowerment

Help me give my students an art library with books written by a diverse catalog of artists. I want to show my students that the path to becoming an artist begins in childhood by sharing these biographies.

My Project

Our school's logo is a yellow sun, which is so fitting, because our students are radiant children. They greet me at the "rainbow line" as they enter my classroom with smiles on their faces, excited to discover what they will make in art class. The arts are where the students of our school shine brightest; however, there is a great need for our students to make gains in literacy-- my hope for this library is to make connections between visual art and English Language Arts. I want my students to read when they finish projects early, when there are unexpected changes in the schedule, or when a student wants a different type of stimulation.

While bridging the gap between visual arts and English Language Arts I want to show my students artists of diverse heritage like Frida, Basquiat, and Faith Ringgold to show them that they can make art history, too.

I want my students to affirm my students in every way possible that they are beautiful and powerful artists capable of changing the world!

So many of my students are visual learners and the images that accompany these gorgeous books will help the build context clues and anchor vocabulary as they strengthen their reading skills. I currently have a small collection of old books about reptiles, bugs, and dinosaurs on a shelf in my room. The art books that are available at our school are written for adults, have very few pictures, and/or are from the 1980-1990s. It's terrible; we need your help!
