Can you imagine trying to decorate the walls of your room with children's work and making bulletin boards all around the school without using colorful paper rolls. Right now when I put up a border and background for a bulletin board, it is always using 10 x 12 sheets of construction paper. Children always have to do projects using construction paper or plain white computer paper. This is my second year teaching and I am teaching in a self-contained sixth grade classroom. The children are in the same room all day and I want the room to look colorful and inviting. I have learned from college courses that children learn more with things posted all over the walls. I would like for those things to not all be in the same 3 colors. In addition, this year my class will do a project after reading the book "Walk Two Moons." I designed a culminating activity in which the students have to “walk” in someone else's shoes. They will be given an old shoe and have to create a life from that shoe based on their own experiences and lessons learned from the text. The experience that the children will have while doing this, will teach me that literature can be an avenue to connect the outside world in the classroom. They will have the opportunity to use their higher order thinking skills and use reading strategies to create this project. I fell this approach will be a good example of how I could bring deeper meaning, interest, and relevance to their reading experience. In order to create this character, the students will have to use large pieces of paper to make a silhouette first. Once they have created this silhouette, they will then start to fill in the characters emotional, physical, and intellectual attributes. The art kraft paper rolls would be used for the students to create their "life size" silhouettes. This project really hones in on the major theme of the book. My sixth grade students and I would love these art kraft paper rolls. If you can donate, it would be greatly appreciated.
