Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher working in low-income and impoverished neighborhoods, I have worked with students who are at higher risk for adversity both inside and outside of the classroom. This year I will have about 500 students each week. Most of my students are African American and Latino and 100% qualify for free or reduced lunch. The pandemic has worsened many of the challenges that our students face daily like poverty, neglect, and mental health. Art is an emotional outlet for many students and a gateway to many opportunities for others.
While I am so excited to begin working with my students, I cannot ignore that virtual learning has exacerbated inequities for students in impoverished communities of color.
With the beginning of this school year being virtual, my students will need more than just assignments online. They need support, they need interaction, they need love, and they need supplies! I hope to raise enough money to create art kits for students who cannot afford to buy art supplies.
My Project
One of the best things about art class is the hands-on part of art-making. It is the opportunity to investigate, explore, and creatively problem solve. My students will begin art class virtually with digital assignments, but I want to offer projects that get the students away from the computer and physically making art again.
I hope that these requested art kits can create an equitable opportunity for all students to succeed and express themselves in art class and throughout this pandemic.
Hands on projects can be very unfair to students who cannot afford art supplies. These art kits will allow the students to do a variety of drawing projects at home like a long term sketchbook project, portrait drawings, and more!
