Ms. Q. from FL is requesting art supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Art is the Universal Language

My students need basic 2D and 3D art supplies, sensory/texture tools to enhance their learning experience, smocks to protect their school uniforms, a drying rack, and one additional iPad that English Language Learners can access.

My Students

My students walk into the art room excited and eager to find out what they will explore that day. "Hello, my most amazing artists!" I greet them. Students become increasingly confident in themselves and their artwork each week they come to art, repeating the mantra, "I am an artist! I can do anything!"

I teach at a Title I school in Florida where approximately 80 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

Since my arrival at this school, art has become a safe and welcoming place for these students to express themselves. I aim to provide a wide variety of media and art forms for my students to explore, most for the very first time.

Despite the hardships and challenges that my students are faced with outside of the classroom, my school community works hard to provide a meaningful learning experience for our students. I may not be able to control their home lives, but can control their experience at school and hope to create a highlight in their day and inspire creativity outside of school. My students are eager to learn and do their best. They amaze me every day.

My Project

Over the last few months, our school received many new students from Puerto Rico displaced by Hurricane Maria. We welcomed these students with open arms - almost every classroom in the school received new students. Many of these families speak little to no English, making it a challenge to connect with their new classmates and teachers.

I hope to connect with my students by providing additional learning resources to support English Language Learners, making my new students feel more comfortable and included in this new environment.

The iPad would be available to students for additional visual resources and translated lesson videos/directions. It would also serve as an uploading station for digital portfolios - my school is in a migrant area with students frequently coming and going, making it difficult to make sure they take their creations with them. With the addition of a classroom uploading station, students can upload their art work (both in-process and finished) to free applications such as Artsonia and SeeSaw to treasure forever.

With an enriching art experience, there comes the unavoidable mess that students love and parents fear. My students are required to wear clothing meeting school uniform requirements. I need a class set of aprons to protect my students' school uniforms, as they cannot afford for them to be ruined.

With the addition of so many new students this school year, my art program is growing but my supplies are dwindling. I need these supplies to provide my students with an enriching art experience, and a new drying rack to place overflow work on.

My goal is to make the art room a welcoming, communicative, collaborative, and exciting learning environment for my students; no matter where they come from or what language they speak. After all, art really is the universal language!
