Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you ask anyone what they remember about school, most students will express with enthusiasm the art projects they created. Art in the elementary school is one area students do not compete against others for grades, but have the opportunity to create out of sheer love and enthusiasm.
My first graders come from diverse backgrounds.
Over one-half of my students are bussed in from other areas of the city and the other half live within the neighborhood. Over 70% of my students are on free and reduced lunch. Only about 4 of the 20 have been to art museums. In the eighteen years I have been teaching, all of my students have enjoyed art and expressed an interest in learning about creating art and art history.
My Project
We spend so much time learning how to read, do math, write and spell, that we forget how important it is to express creativity. I would like to expose my students to more art through clay, painting, and drawing.
While we are learning about animals in science and reading, students can use their minds and hands to construct air dried clay animals. Students will paint their creatures and then write a small report describing the animals characteristics.
Students will also use the canvas boards to paint pictures depicting something that inspires them. It is important to lead, but allow students to create using what inspires them. They will be able to share with family and friends their masterpieces during a classroom Art Exhibit.
Throughout the year, with each reading, social studies, or science theme, we will use the watercolor paper to create works of art inspired by our units. Students will be able to use their creative juices to remember what we have learned in class.
We can help students keep their creative juices flowing during the most wonderful years of their lives.
I remember how much fun we had creating works of art and expressing our creative sides and would like to give the same experiences to my students. There is still room in the curriculum for creativity!
