This project will serve a group of elementary aged students who are destined to have huge impacts on the world. Although 80% of them live in poverty, and more than 60% are English language learners, they are hard workers who only wish to achieve, and one day leave their footprint on the world. Many of these young boys and girls are overcoming the language barriers of learning a second language, many of whom are separated from their families who live thousands of miles away. Some live just down the street, but need and deserve the enrichment that real-world projects can provide.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of materials to enhance our learning environment. In addition to developing literacy skills, we will be learning about the economics of creative production, all while adding artwork that solidifies our understanding and taps into my students’ multiple modes of learning. We need several art and literacy supplies, such as paint, paper, and glue, with a heavy emphasis on tactile reinforcement. Many learners come into my classroom with kinesthetic needs. Resources for sensory exploration such as water beads, magic sand, instant snow, and other miniature items (plus storage tubs) will help my students who need to touch and feel and explore as ways of releasing stress from the academic pressures of the classroom. I have also requested several touch and feel books so that my students can experience reading with books that offer an additional tool for increasing comprehension- the tactile materials are there to reinforce memory of the stories.
