Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What happened to art class in elementary school? Artistic expression is so vital to young children's cognitive development yet we haven't art class at our school in the last 12 years I have been teaching there. So I take it upon myself to bring art class to them right in our room!
Our school is like a little island of peace and safety in a low-income neighborhood in Northern California, which struggles with the typical problems of unsafe streets, pollution, run down buildings, etc.
In spite of these challenges which our students face they come to school eager and excited about learning and growing. I have a wonderful group of first graders who are simply delightful in their enthusiasm, creativity and yet to be unlocked potential. I want to give them the kind of education I had when I was in school, which always included time for art (which I always loved)!
My Project
I am requesting just one type of supply: Do A Dot paint markers which have a sponge tip (similar to bingo markers) for making perfect dots in a variety of colors. I first used these with my own son and they were so amazing and fun I knew I had to get them for my class. The beauty of this particular item is that they are so versatile in their uses. Of course art is the primary use but they can also be used to great effect in mathematics. For struggling learners they can make rows of dots for counting and solving basic computations. More advanced students can use them to illustrate and solve word problems in a visually appealing and different way. The list of uses really goes on longer than I have space to describe. They are just that awesome!
In my opinion it is just heartbreaking that art is missing from our school.
My student deserve a chance to have a well balanced and enriching education just like anyone else and I plan to do whatever I can to make that happen. By funding this project you will be changing the lives of disadvantaged children by making their school experience richer and deeper than it ever would be otherwise. Your support is appreciated beyond words.
