Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a small, fully inclusive charter school, where almost seventy percent of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch. I work with students who are labeled in many ways: ELL, LD, ID, BIP, IEP, SLP, apraxic, autistic, ADD, ADHD, ODD, and the list goes on. I'm working to help students remove their labels and find their feet, as well as their voices.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but one thing they have in common is their thirst for creative learning opportunities.
My Project
This project will help my diverse class of students express themselves appropriately and confidently. Too often we have only 2-3 colors for student self-expression. Construction paper, crayons, and markers don't often come in the beautiful shades of everyone. Instead of using brown, they will have options from a range of shades that more appropriately represent how they see themselves. I'm excited to discover that markers, crayons, colored pencils, and construction paper can be ordered in different, flesh-colored shades.
Our students come in varying shades- so should our art supplies!
This project also includes crayon sharpeners, acrylic paint markers, and gel pens for intricate art. These resources can't be purchased asked for through school supplies and honestly- we already ask too much. This art project will help us create projects and images that represent how we see ourselves.
